Online course: Casting for rookies – with feedback

Have you got a gun dog and want to teach it casting and blind retrieves? Do you want -to work in a fun and reward-based way where you split the training into small parts and then put them together? Then this is a course for you!

In this course we focus on casting foundations – neither you nor your dog need any prior knowledge about casting.

You’ll get to try several different ways to get the dog to go where you want to: using food bowl, targets. (Your dog doesn’t necessarily have to mastered delivery to hand since we’ll primarily will work without objects to start with). We’ll have a look at the four different directions and how to start teaching them to your dog: straight lines (from your side), lefts, rights, and push backs. We’ll try a few different exercises to make sure your dog really focusses in the direction you want it to. Then we’ll add distance and distractions. We’ll also make sure that the stop whistle works and spend a few training sessions on the stop whistle if needed. We’ll also teach the dog self-control and to really pay attention to what we say – not just guess what’s coming next.

Finally, you’ll get useful advice on how to build blind retrieves and how to make the dog run where you want it to with great confidence.

Prior knowledge

No prior knowledge is required. The course is based on the same training mindset as the book Retrieving for All Occasions. It is not necessary that you have the book to take this course; although we strongly recommend it as it contains lots of helpful background information as well as an entire chapter on casting and blind retrieves.

Prerequisites

The course starts as soon as you’ve registered and then you have six months to finish it with feedback, but lifetime access to the course material without feedback.

You have the option to submit videos and questions and get feedback from us. Keep the length of the videos to a maximum of three minutes.

We can provide feedback on an unlimited number of videos, just let us know what you want feedback on. You can upload just a couple of videos per training session, or multiple videos of the dog performing a single drill like blind retrieves over obstacles; whatever you feel you need assistance with. Needless to say, if you don’t want to send videos you don’t have to, it is not a requirement for this course.
